Buy Me Some Peanuts...

I LOVE Saturday mornings.  I get to sleep in as late as I want, or at least until Mr. Right shows up at my house and pounces on me.  (I made it all the way to 7:30 this morning, which is pretty good!)  And I usually have time to knit a bit and scan some of the Picture Pile of Doom.  What's not to love?

This week in  honor of opening weekend (that's the start of baseball season for those of you who aren't in the states, or just don't care about such trivial stuff), I decided to share some photos of my uncle Donald.  Donald was my grandmother's baby brother, and the Unknown Soldier of my picture pile.  Apparently, he was also an avid baseball player...

I'm guessing this was taken around 1940, when Donald would've been 15.  It's a pretty cool shot, but not nearly as fun as this one...

He's totally safe, by the way.  Pretty close call, though.  These were a fun find, especially since by the time I met him, Donald was an old guy with two grown kids and a huge, slobbery St. Bernard named Rosie.  It's nice to know he took some time to go play outside.  Which, coincidentally, is exactly what I'm about to do.  But when I get back, I'm going to go check out lots of other fun vintage photos over at Sepia Saturday.  Go visit if you get the chance!

  3. Those are nice photos of your Uncle Donald. He must have looked quite different when you met him.

  4. Yes we have a professional ballplayer in our group of used to know school friends. A grandson of a school mate plays for the Mets. I need to check out if they won last night. Also Go Cats. UK vs UCONN. Route for us if you will. Those photos are priceless.

  5. The photos are wonderful. Old family photos really give you a glimpse into the lives of people you think you already knew pretty well

  6. SO, let me guess...when you met Donald, the huge slobbery St. Bernard was a also a huge draw? Am I wrong? By the way, that first photo is classic and wonderful.

  7. I've been trying for years to get a decent sport's action photo then you bring two along at once. Not much chance of me getting any at baseball in the UK. I would have liked to see that slobbery St Bernard.

  8. There is something about baseball which gives rise to particular body shapes and movements. You could take that second great photograph and air-brush out all signs of baseball (the gloves the uniforms whatever) and you would still know it was a picture of a baseball game from the very movements. Fascinating stuff.

  9. Those are fabulous pictures! My grandfather had pictures of the teams at his school but they were all posed, these action shots are wonderful.

  10. Wonderful shots. It seems so rare to find vintage sports snapshots. I have one of a baseball team playing in a stadium in Oregon in around 1920, but no wonderful action shots like these.

  11. Those are excellent! I remember when I was a kid how hard it was to picture the adults as ever being younger than they were then. My grandmother told me that she met my grandfather while she was playing in a high school basketball game and it took me days to process that my grandmother had played basketball.
