FO Friday -- Super Snug edition

I know I promised Snug would be unveiled last Friday, but I didn't realize how hard it would be to find good toggle buttons.  It took a while, but I got the absolute *perfect* toggle buttons for this sweater, which you may remember from earlier in the week.  Like so...

I LOVE these buttons.  And then I had to remember how to single crochet to add the trim.  And then I added the trim all the way around instead of just on one side.  And then I decided I liked it that way, so there.  And now, it's FINALLY finished.  Like so...

It really turned out pretty cute.  I had grand visions of embroidering a pink flower or two on the front, but in the end it came down to a couple of things.  Thing one:  I can't embroider to save my life.  Thing 2:  I really just want to knit on Peerie Flooers at the moment and I couldn't be bothered.  Is that bad?  Hope not.P1030831
I do have to say that while this pattern looks super simple, it is in fact kind of a pain in the hiney.  Really, I'd rather spend 5 minutes seaming a few tiny seams than a couple of hours doing all sorts of knitting gymnastics to avoid them.  But that might just be me.  It's cute, though.  And I learned all sorts of cool stuff like provisional cast ons and Elizabeth Zimmerman's sewn bind off, which is pretty nifty.  All in all, I'd say it's a win.

Now, I'm staying up at night worrying that I didn't use washable wool, and it's for a baby, and the mom is going to either accidentally turn it into a doll sweater with spectacular buttons or else hate me for giving it to her.  What do y'all think?  Washable only for babies, or do you sometimes gift wooly stuff?

After you've solved that burning question for me, head over and check out FO Friday and Fiber Arts Friday, both crammed to the rafters with neat-o projects made by spectacular people.  That's a win, too.

Happy weekend!

  1. You are right, those are the absolutely perfect buttons. What an incredible cute baby knit. I am a super sucker for grey and think it with go with more stuff without any embroidery on it.
I wouldn't worry about it not be machine washable. Mums are really good at looking after delicate things (like tiny helpless humans - your sweater will be waayyy easier than that). Just make sure you give the mum clear washing instructions. It's been my experience that in general mums are amazing multi-taskers but sometimes forget things that aren't written down and/or repeated a dozen times ; )
Oh, and I love a sewn bind off too. It works great and feels so sneaky (and less fiddly) to be doing it with a darning needle.

  2. It looks so cute, and those buttons are really just right :)

I'd make sure the mum knows the washing instructions (maybe attach the ball band from the yarn to the gift) and it should be fine.

  3. I always go for washable stuff but preferably merino, not the awful cheap acrylic stuff we get here - the colours are cute but I've bought yarn that SQUEAKED when I knit with it.
However, your hoodie looks lovely and the colour is really practical - is good for a girl or a boy, and doesn't show too much dirt !

  4. It's gorgeous, and those buttons set it off perfectly!

I would normally use washable wool, but for something special like that I think it's fine, just make sure you give the mom the ball band and tell her not to just stick in in the machine!

  6. I use Superwash Wool to avoid the issue of washing and to still enjoy the knit while I am knitting it. I hate acrylic, even blends, unless it is more wool than acrylic.
Cute, cute!! I agree, seaming a little is no big deal. I actually love sewing!

  7. The buttons are a great fit. I've made several alpaca/merino baby sweaters...not a fan of superwash wool.

  8. I don't knit baby stuff much, so I can't really comment on washable or not. I mostly just do super washable baby blankets. :)

I love those buttons though, and the sweater itself is super cute!

  9. The buttons are perfect. I think it's is okay to give the wooly stuff, especially for such a cute baby gift as your Snug! As long as you let the mom know not to throw it in wash willy-nilly. And I can't wait to see more of your Peerie Flooers hat!

  11. Aw, the sweater is too cute! As for yarn...I think wool is fine, just put the fear of the knitter god into the recipient...

  12. I do a little bit of both. You could always throw a bottle of soak with it.

  13. When you gift the wooly object be sure to include washing instructions :) that's what I do!

  14. Wow! those buttons are gorgeous!

I never gift handwash only wool. I just don't trust people to care for it. I usually go with superwash or something washable like cotton.

  15. That turned out great! I've been thinking of trying that pattern out myself someday. I really like the flowers that are used on this kimono baby sweater and they are super easy to knit: http://thecompletefabrication.blogspot.com/2008/03/seamless-kimono-sweater.html. I thought they might look cute on your snug.

PS: to answer your question on my blog, my fingerless mitts are made to fit adults :)

  17. It's adorable, and the buttons are super! Definitely worth hand washing :-)

I actually like seaming. Mattress stitch is practically magic in my opinion. I think some knit wear benefits structurally from the seaming, too.

  18. Very lovely! Those buttons are perfect! Do you crochet? Some little crocheted flowers would be perfect! I can make you some if you like.

  19. Those buttons are truly wonderful--they're so rustic and have lots of character.

I hate seaming too. I'll do almost anything to avoid it.

  20. No worries on the non machine washable..as long as the recipient knows.
Finding perfect buttons is as fun as knitting itself. I often have better luck at antique or thrift stores. Congrats on learning all the new techniques. I love learning new things everyday.

  21. It is too cute. And you are right. It does look simple to make from the outside even though I am sure it wasn't.-Tori
