Work In Progress Wednesday v.39

Happy Wednesday, y'all!  Honestly, it seems like we're having them at least twice a week these days.  They just keep coming faster and faster.  Fortunately for me, I had 2 flights this week to actually sneak in some uninterrupted knitting time.  It was all kinds of awesome.  At the moment, the Super Secret Earl Grey Socks look like this:

I'm about 2/3 of a repeat away from starting the heel flap -- according to the pattern, at least.  But, these socks seem pretty short for a boy, and more importantly... pretty short compared to Mr. Right's other socks.  No problem:  I'll just add another repeat to the leg.  Problem:  I'm only about 35% sure that I have enough yarn for that. The pattern makes socks to fit shoe size 12, and takes 460 yards.  Mr. Right's feet are size 10.5, but my skein is only 450 yards.  To make matters worse, I bought the yarn eons ago from an LYS that's no longer with us, and the ball band is long gone, so no chance of lot matching.

So now I'm thinking I may do the toes an another color, just to be safe.  I'm just not sure how well that will work for this pattern, where the cable is carried all the way to the toe.

What do y'all think?  Blue toes?  Short socks?  Pray hard and hope I make it?  Any advice would be much appreciated!  It's extra important that these turn out perfect.

In other news, did you see that KnitPicks unveiled their new line of dish cloth cotton yarn (called "Dishie" -- cute!) five minutes after last week's treatise on the joys of dish cloths?  Coincidence?  I think not.  We're all about trendsetting around here, folks.  Speaking of which, you can go catch up with the rest of the cutting edge over at WIPW.  And while you're doing that, I'm off to fold my laundry.  Another trend?  Only time will tell...

  1. Nice design down the side. Plane time can be good craft time unless you get a chatted person sitting beside you when you're trying to count. arghh

  2. Beautiful socks!

I'd go with a mismatched toe- no one will see it when you're wearing them :)

  3. Plane knitting is the best. Unfortunately, sitting next to a five year old asking "Are we there yet?" every 10 seconds didn't allow for much knitting on my part. Glad that you got some in and the sock is looking great. I would knit a contrasting toe, also. Maybe choose a discreet color like dark blue or black. Thanks for the tip on Dishie. I'm always on the lookout for dishcloth cotton.

  4. could you squeeze in a darker grey toe and heel cup?

  5. The sock looks great! I think either a toe in another color (I'd do something wild and surprising if you're just doing a different toe) or a toe and heel in a darker shade of gray would be fine.

  6. I like that pattern, very nifty-looking. And I agree with the other commenters - I'd do a different-colored heel and toe, so that way you really don't have to worry about running out of yarn.

  7. I've never done socks, so I have no advice, but they look lovely ;) I love the colour and would be tempted to do a really striking contrast toe - bright purple or red or something like that!

  8. Despite moaning about all my socks on the needles I want your socks. ::sigh::

  9. I know what you mean about Wednesdays coming around really quick - sometimes I worry that I won't have done anything in a week.

On the pattern photos, the socks do look to be quite short. Style-wise, I would probably go for a longer sock with a contrasting toe (and heel if possible), but then I like long socks...

  10. I agree, use something else for the toe. No one will notice unless he has his shoes off, and then they'll just admire your fine knitting job and assume that you did it as a style statement. We'll never tell :-)

  11. I usually do a contrasting heel and toe if I think I'll run out of yarn. Nice socks! That's a great pattern.

  12. Okay, first off, I DID SEE DISHIE!!! I'm so excited about it because the colors are amazing and different than offered by Sugar 'N Cream, so YAY. That will be in my cart after the yarn stash is over (and I have money). LOL

Your sock looks great. I'd say, can you do the heel and toe in the same color as each other, but different from the sock? I'd go with a darker or lighter color that's similar to what you're using.

So, Kurt wants me to make him socks. How many stitches did you cast on for boy socks?

  14. Gorgeous sock! I say go with a different colour toe (and maybe matching heel?) and make it a good length.
I hate that sick feeling when you aren't sure you will have enough yarn to finish. I went back to the shop yesterday and, thank goodness, they had another skein so I can finish my baby vest - phew!

  15. I think something totally randomly unexpectedly at the toe like lime green or hot pink. Seriously...
